Alfred E. Sosienski , age 89, of Wilmington, DE passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2017.

Al retired from Standard Distributors in 1993 as a salesman. He served in the Pacific Theatre with the Seabees and the 5th Marine Division at Iwo Jima and Okinawa and was awarded 2 Purple Hearts. He coached St. Hedwig Huskies CYO football for 12 years, was past captain and 50 year Men of Malvern, a member of St. Joseph on the Brandywine Knights of Columbus Council and a Fourth Degree member of Bishop Fitz Maurice Assembly. Al was a life member of the Polish Library and Pulaski Legion, volunteered at the VA Hospital since 1993, was inducted into the Delaware Veterans Hall of Heroes in 2000 and received the Jefferson Award for community work in 2005.

Al was a past commander and life member of Polish American Post 3257, Captain of VFW State Honor Guard and past Commander and Life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Al was a life member of the Military Order of the Cooties Pup Tent #2, life member of Oak-Orchard American Legion #28, life member of Sampson WWII Vets, a member of the Navy Seabees Veterans, a member of the Marine Corps League and a life member of the 6th Marine Division.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Regina (Kulesza). He is survived by his wife, Adele (Gilson) Sosienski. He is also survived by daughters, Catherine Wilczynski of Wilmington, DE and Marcella Lukowski of New Castle, DE.; 1 grandson, Jeffrey and 5 granddaughters, Annie, Paula, Regina, Rebecca and Kristen and 9 great grandchildren; 4 step-daughters, Christine MacPherson of Newark, DE, June Gilson of Wayne, PA, Sandra Gilson of Berwyn, PA and Jacqueline MacGibbon of Wayne, PA; 7 step-grandsons, Joshua, Benjamin, Stephen, Douglas, Christopher, Peter and James; 2 step-granddaughters, Caroline and Claire and 2 step-great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at 11:00 am in St. Hedwig Church, Linden and S. Harrison Streets, Wilmington, DE . Burial will follow in St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery. Visitation for Al will be held in church starting at 10:00 am.

The family requests, memorial contributions be made to the Military Order of the Purple Heart Foundation, P O Box 49, Annandale, VA 22003.
