Edward J. Gawinski, 89, of Wilmington, DE peacefully passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2016.

A lifelong resident of Hedgeville, Ed was born in Wilmington on February 19, 1927, son of the late Joseph and Eva (Birowski) Gawinski. A veteran of the United States Army, he served our country during the World War II era. Ed was employed with All American Engineering and retired in 1990. Ed was a devoted member of St. Hedwig Parish throughout his life. He was also the oldest active member of the Polish Library Association. Beginning at age 60, Ed became involved in competitive race walking and was proud to walk in the Boston Marathon at age 75. On November 10, 2002, Ed set a national record, in his age group, 75-79, finishing a 50K (31 miles) in 7 hours, 7 minutes, 22 seconds in Hauppauge, NY, where he still holds the record. He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan, although they disappointed him these last few years! Ed was active with the Delaware Senior Olympics where this year he received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ed is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen (Matyniak) Gawinski; his daughters, Terry Ann Episcopo (Eric), Karen Gawinski, and Diane Gawinski Cathell; and his beloved granddaughters, who were truly his pride and joy, Helene and Julia Episcopo. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Gawinski (Jean); and several nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

Ed was predeceased by his sister, Mary Rucinski (John); and his lifelong friend, Raymond Smolka.

A special “Thank You” to Biggs and the Team of Helen Graham for taking such great care of Ed for the past 9 years. You truly are a blessing!

Family and friends are invited to the visitation at St. Hedwig Church, Linden and S. Harrison Streets, Wilmington on Wednesday, January 4 from 9:00-10:45AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM. Interment will be held privately in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
