William J. Wisniewski, age 95 of Wilmington, DE passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2017.

Bill graduated from Salesianum in 1940 and was awarded a basketball scholarship from LaSalle University. In 1942 he was drafted and took his basic training with the 102nd Infantry Division at Camp Maxey, Paris, TX. He volunteered for overseas duty and on June 13, 1944, he landed in Normandy, France and was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division with the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment. He participated in the St. Lo Breakthrough and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the “Combat Infantry Badge”. He was honorably discharged from the service in December 1945. The following year he returned to LaSalle, to finish his studies, under the G.I. Bill of Rights and graduated in 1947 with a BS degree in Accounting.

He worked for Cork Insulation, B. F. Shaw Co. and in 1956 he was employed by Getty Oil, who was later taken over by Texaco. He retired from Texaco in 1984 and after retirement he worked for Rose & Kupherman CPA Firm on a temporary basis. For approximately 50 years he did volunteer work at St. Hedwig Church, as the accountant, treasurer of the festival, was a member of the pastoral and finance councils, co-chair for Project 2000 and other church related projects. He also was a member of the Polish Library and the VFW Post 7234 of Ocean View, DE.

Bill is survived by his wife, Frances (Krolicki) Wisniewski of 68 years; 2 sons, Michael E. (Gail) Wisniewski, PhD of Cary, NC and Paul F. (Karen) Wisniewski Newark, DE; 2 daughters, Judith (Gary) Charles of Wilmington, DE and Mary Wisniewski of Bear, DE; 3 grandchildren, Michael, Matthew and Charles and 3 great grandchildren, Felicia, Kayla and Charles III. He was also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, William Wisniewski, Jr., his brothers; Frank, John, Stanley, Joseph and Edward Wisniewski and his sisters; Stella Janicki, Josephine Piascinski and Martha Macuk. He is also predeceased by his parents, Franciszek and Stefania (Kaminska) Wisniewski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 10:30 am in St. Hedwig Church, Linden and S. Harrison Streets Wilmington, DE. Burial will follow Mass in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE. Visitation for William will be held in Church starting at 9:30am.
