William A. Szymanski, Sr., 87, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully at his home while surrounded by loving family on Thursday, September 21, 2023. Born in Wilmington on July 13, 1936, he was the son of the late William and Dorothy (Szczuka) Szymanski. Bill attended St. Matthew’s School, Salesianum School, and Goldey Beacom College.
Bill served in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Devens in Massachusetts. He played baseball and softball while at Fort Devens, the teams winning First Army Championships while he was there. He loved to tell stories of cold weather equipment testing on Mt. Washington. He built Army tanks at Chrysler, worked at Electric Hose and Rubber for ten years, and retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 29 years of service as a letter carrier at the Newark Post Office.
He excelled at sports, including baseball, softball, touch football, basketball, and bowling. Also an avid golfer, Bill worked as a ranger at the former Three Little Bakers Country Club for 15 years. Bill enjoyed watching golf and rooting for his Eagles, Phillies, and 76ers.
He loved spending time with his family and was affectionately known as “Sunky Bull” to his nieces, nephews, and their families.
Bill is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia (Morrison) Szymanski; his children, William Szymanski, Jr. and Jill Szymanski; his sister, Mary Ann Reece (Joe, deceased); brother-in-law, Doug Morrison (Eileen, deceased); sisters-in-law, Paige Weigle (Chuck), Mary Perry (Harry), Shirley Heinbaugh; and several nieces, nephews, and their families. He was predeceased by his parents; his mother and father-in-law, Edward and Geneva Morrison; his sister, Geraldine Walsh (Joe, deceased), and his brothers, Stanley Szymanski (Jackie) and Bernard Joseph Szymanski (Bernie).
Family and friends are invited to visit at St. Matthew Church, 901 E. Newport Pike, Wilmington on Thursday, September 28 from 9:30 - 10:45AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM, immediately followed by entombment in All Saints Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and aides from Christiana C͏ar͏e Home Health for their support and Bill’s care during the last four years—special thanks to Dr. Morgan, Cherie DeMerchant, Rose, Barbara, Vickie, Jasmine, Quintoria, and Pearl as well as Sharon from AccentCare Hospice.
