Mr. Allen “Pop” J. Nagowski, age 89, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at his daughter’s home. He was surrounded by his family. Born March 26, 1924, Allen was the son of the late Allen & Nellie (Cox) Nagowski. He was born and raised in Wilmington, DE. He attended Wilmington High School where he was an outstanding athlete and a four year member of the varsity basketball and football teams. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 1019th Engineer Treadway Bridge Co. where he stormed the beach at Normandy on D-day. He served from 1943–1945. After his military service, Allen worked as a plasterer and was a 50 year member of the Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons Union. Allen was a lifelong member of St. Hedwig Church in Wilmington, DE. He enjoyed gardening, dancing, listening to polka music and watching the Phillies and Eagles on TV.
Allen was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary (Czerwinski) Nagowski; his sisters, Marie and Delores and his brother, Robert. He is survived by his brother, Gerald Nagowski and wife, Maryann; his sons, Allen Nagowski and wife, Joan, John (Jack) Nagowski and Linda; daughter, Kathy Mahon and husband, Bill. Allen is survived by wife, Delores (Testa) Nagowski. Also surviving Allen are his six grandchildren, Dean and Jason Nagowski, Billy, Katie, Kelsey and Brian Mahon, along with many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Vitas Hospice, especially Maryann, Nancy, Moses, Joanne and Steven for their care and compassion during Allen’s final days.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Friday, August 30, 2013 in St. Hedwig Church, Linden and S. Harrison Streets, Wilmington, DE. Burial will follow in Cathedral Cemetery. Visitation for Allen will be held prior to Mass in Church from 10am until time of Mass.
