Welcome to the memorial page for

Anna M. (Szwed) Wisniewski

January 11, 1918 ~ June 16, 2014 (age 96) 96 Years Old

                            Anna M. Wisniewski

Age 96 of Wilmington, DE passed away on Monday, June 16, 2014 in the Christiana Hospital.

Ann grew up in a large family in Browntown during the Great Depression. She and her siblings learned to be self-sufficient early in life, as both parents passed away young. Her beloved Adam swept her off her feet with his dashing looks and dance moves and was always the love of her life.

Ann worked at the NVF fiber mill for nearly 5 decades, working her way up to inspector. She was generous, loved life, and had a great sense of humor. She had a green thumb and a passion for gardening, and kept an award-winning city garden. Ann especially blossomed in her senior years, learning how to drive at the age of 65 and filling her days with volunteer work. She drove well into her nineties, often going to her cottage in South Bethany Beach.

Ann worked in St. Hedwig's rectory as a young girl, and later was one of the church's most dedicated volunteers. She maintained St. Hedwig's rose bushes, and volunteered for many years in the Polish Festival kitchen. She was known as "the soup lady", and specialized in sorrel and beet soups. She was a lifetime member of the Holy Rosary Society at St. Hedwig Church.

She volunteered for the DE Center for Horticulture since its beginning, planting flowers city-wide and judging the city garden contest.  Ann also served at the food pantry at St. Stephen's. On her own, she often brought an extra box of food to the Poor Clare Sisters, downtown.

Aside from her official volunteer activities, she frequently drove neighbors to appointments, visited with the sick, and took her dog, "Girl", to nursing homes. She was especially kind-hearted towards small children and animals, and enjoyed long walks from the west side to the riverfront.  Ann was most happy when active, and enjoying a joke with friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her daughter, Annette Boyle of North Wilmington, DE; 2 granddaughters, Hallie Sianni (Anthony) of Pike Creek, DE and Heather Galvin (Henry) of Charleston, SC; a sister, Cecilia Kehnast of Laurel, De and several nieces and nephews. Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Adam F. Wisniewski in 1995.

The family would like to give special thanks to Cindy Richards and Patricia Szwed for their care and concern for Ann.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 10:30 am in St. Hedwig Church, Linden and S. Harrison Streets, Wilmington, DE. Visitation for Ann will be held in St. Hedwig Church on Saturday morning starting at 9:30 am. Burial will follow the Mass in Cathedral Cemetery.
