A proud Salesian Gentleman, a loving husband, caring doctor and veteran, John S. Piendak returned to his creator on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.
John grew up on the east side of Wilmington and graduated from Salesianum School in 1947. Before moving to St. Louis to earn his medical degree, the young Pole would fall in love and eventually marry the love of his life, Catherine “Kitty” Piendak. After matriculation, Dr. Piendak would enlist in the United States Air Force as a Flight Surgeon, serving in Birmingham, Alabama and Long Island, New York. Upon his return to Wilmington, the good doctor would help pioneer radiology in the First State by providing the state’s first CAT scans as a co-founder and senior partner at Papastavros Associates, PA. While not donning his white coat, John was a loving father and grandfather, a generous friend, an astute intellectual, devoted parishioner of St. Joseph on the Brandywine, and caretaker of the wildlife in his backyard.
He was predeceased by his soul mate and partner in life, Catherine (Cusack) Piendak. John is survived by his daughter, Lisa McGivney and her husband, Billy; his son, John Piendak; his daughter, Melissa Percopo and her husband, Leo; his honorary son, Joe Cann; his grandchildren, Brendan and wife, Sara, Brigid and Liam McGivney, Vincent and Katarina Percopo, and Monica Manngard.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Sunday, February 26 from 2:00 – 4:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville on Monday, February 27 at 10:30AM, immediately followed by interment in the parish cemetery.
