Helen Hazewski

Helen left this world on October 16, 2015 to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ. Helen (Jankowska) Hazewski was born on April 30, 1920 to Martha (Gawinska) and John Jankowski. She married Joseph Hazewski in February of 1941 and was widowed at an early age in 1966.

Helen is survived by her four children, Thomas Hazewski and his wife, Elva, Joseph Hazewski and his wife, Cassy, Martha-Anne McDowell and Edward Hazewski and his wife, Christina; 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren and her sister, Hedwig Masciantonio.

Helen worked at Ursuline Academy for 15 years and was affiliated with the Sisters of the Visitation. Because of her devotion to the Sisters, she was dubbed an honorary nun and was referred to as Sister Helen. Her faith was first and foremost in her life. She was among the first lay Eucharist Ministers at St. Hedwig Church and she always responded to any call for help from anyone in her community. No matter who helped her in any way, when they were done she said,  ”Thank you, Jesus!”. We replied, “What do you mean? We are the ones who did it” but, she replied; “He (Jesus) gave you the ability”.  Helen was a member of St. Hedwig Holy Rosary Society.

She was also predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Elizabeth Gentkowski and Victoria Korup and her brother, Edward Jankowski.

Visitation will be held in St. Hedwig Church, Linden and S. Harrison Streets, Wilmington, DE on Thursday morning, October 22, 2015, starting at 9:30 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am. Interment will follow in the Cathedral Cemetery where she will lay beside her husband, Joe.
