John P. Murphy

John P. Murphy, age 78, of Kennett Square, PA, peacefully passed away on Friday, September 3, 2021 with his loving wife by his side.

John was born in Portsmouth, VA to the late Maurice and Mary O’Neal Murphy in 1943. After graduating from high school, John enlisted in the United States Air Force. Sgt. Murphy served for 4 years and was honorably discharged.

John enjoyed travel and outdoor activities, including camping, fishing, and most of all, photography. He will be remembered for his quick wit and big heart. 

He worked in health and safety for the Shell Oil Company and the Ford Motor Company. In his later years he was able to return to his love for photography.  Local residents may remember his smile behind the counter at the Camera Shop and Cutler Camera.     

Along with both of his parents, John was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Murphy and his brother, Mark Murphy.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Reiss Murphy; his sons, Jeremy (Karole) Murphy and Christopher Murphy; his siblings, Sherry Trout, Carole Metcalfe, Geraldine Arbios, Mary Griffin, Maurice Murphy and Anne Murphy; his grandchildren, Christopher, Alexander, Liam, Sydney, Riley, Mason and Camille.

A funeral Mass for John will be held privately. Interment will take place at St. Hedwig Cemetery and Mausoleum in Dearborn Heights, MI.

In lieu of flowers, the Murphy family suggests memorial contribution be made in John’s name to Brandywine River Valley Hospice in 125 Bell Tower Ln., Suite 1B, Oxford, PA 19363 or St Hedwig Catholic Church, 408 S. Harrison St., Wilmington, DE 19805.
