Mary S. Barbieri, 90, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 12, 2012 at the Heartland Hospice House of Delaware, surrounded by her family.
Mary was born in the Bronx, New York, on August 24, 1921, daughter of the late Giovanni and Rosa Corvo (Galizia). She worked for many years as a seamstress in New York’s garment district. She married her husband, Louis, in 1960, and settled in Landing, New Jersey, near Lake Hopatcong. She was widowed in 1979, and moved to Delaware in 1988. She lived at the Antonian for 19 years, and developed many new friendships during her time in Delaware. She particularly enjoyed St. Anthony’s Italian festival, activities at St. Anthony’s Senior Center, and trips to Atlantic City casinos. Above all, she loved spending time with her family.
Mary is survived by her children, her daughter, Rosemary Szczechowski and her husband, Joe, of Newark and her son, John Barbieri and his wife, Nicki, of Landing, New Jersey. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Joey and Michael Szczechowski and Maria and Nicole Barbieri. Mary is also survived by her niece, Roseanne Volpe of Texas and her nephew, John Corvo, of Florida.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Louis, her sister, Vincenza Corvo, and her brother, Joseph Corvo. In life, Mary and her sister never lived apart, and Mary took care of Vincenza up until her death in 1982.
The family would like to give special thanks to the wonderful staff of Heartland Hospice House, who provided Mary with loving care, comfort, and compassion.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707, on Friday, August 17, where visitation will be held from 10-11 am, immediately followed by the Mass.
