Mary S. Matuszewski
Mary was welcomed into the comforting arms of Our Lord on Monday, October 26, 2015. She was then embraced warmly by her dear husband, Peter (1991) and by her beloved daughter, Karen Frances (1997).
She was born on June 22, 1930 at 121 Bird Street, Wilmington, DE. Her fondest memories were of that street and of the good times she had with the many children and families there. She could recall every house number and tell you who lived where. She mentioned many times that the great depression bound everyone together. She was married on June 19, 1948 and it was a great surprise, when, three days later, she found out that she and her husband shared the same birth date.
Mary was fluent in Polish, which she learned from her grandfather, Andrew Staszczak. In her younger days, Mary was a great embroiderer. After her husband’s passing she became an avid reader of the historical novelist, Eugenia Price. She eagerly awaited each new novel.
Mary was the daughter of the late Joseph and Frances (Staszczak) Kempczynski. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter; daughter, Karen; infant brother, Eugene (1932); her oldest sister and friend Irene Szostkowski (Steven) and by her youngest sister, Anne Miazga Zawacki (John).
Mary is survived by her sons, Eugene P. (Kathy) of Newark, DE and Robert of Wilmington, DE; brothers, Joseph Kempczynski Jr. of Newark, DE and Anthony Kempczynski of Wilmington, DE. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Jennie Musacchio and brother-in-law, Edward Miazga and her best friend, Marie Foskey and many nieces and nephews, both great and great great ones.
She was especially proud of the fact that she was the last female family member who could properly be addressed with the Polish Honorific of “Pani Matuszewska”.
The family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to the staff, nurses and doctors at Cadia Rehabilitation, Pike Creek, for their dedication, kindness and gentle care afforded to Mary since April.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am, in St. Hedwig Church, Linden and S. Harrison Streets, Wilmington, DE on Saturday, October 31, 2015. Visitation will be in church starting at 9:30 am. Burial will follow in the Cathedral Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to: St. Hedwig Church, 408 S. Harrison Street. Wilmington, DE 19805.
