Stephen Mitchell Fillion, 91, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025. He was born on October 14, 1933, at Walter Reed Hospital.
A self-proclaimed army brat, Steve lived in half a dozen states before his family settled in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, when he was in high school. After graduating, he joined the United States Air Force and served as a radio communications specialist in Wassertrüdingen, Germany, from 1954 to 1957. Upon returning home, he began a 30-year long career at Diamond State Telephone, starting as a lineman and retiring as a technology supervisor.
Steve loved to travel with his wife, Sally. They visited many European countries, made regular trips to Maine, and visited the Adirondacks every winter to cross-country ski, but Germany always held a special place in his heart. Steve enjoyed carving ducks and songbirds, working sudoku and crossword puzzles, and attending the opera and symphony.
In 1999, Steve converted to Catholicism and became an active member of the St. Hedwig Church community. He was a Eucharistic minister, RCIA facilitator, cook and event staff for the Annual Polish Festival, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 7608 (St. John Paul II)—where he served as Grand Knight.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Sally Fillion; daughter, Valerie Macneir; grandchildren, Kyle Gies and Allison Macneir; and his brothers Adrian Fillion and Jimmy Fillion. He is preceded in death by his mother, Merle (Hensler) Fillion; stepfather, Carroll Fillion; and two sisters, Pat Gayheart and Mary Sylvester.
The family would like to thank Accent Care—especially Christine, Dawn, and Traci—for their compassion in caring for Steve over the last three months and for their warmth and kindness in helping us through the process during his last few days.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at St. Hedwig Church, 408 S. Harrison Street, Wilmington, DE 19805, where family and friends may visit beginning at 10:00am. Interment will be held in Cathedral Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests making a donation in Steve’s name to St. Hedwig Church, at the address listed above.
