Rem passed away peacefully on December 2, 2012. He was born in South Amboy, NJ in 1920 and attended St. Mary's High School where he played on the State Championship baseball team. Following graduation, Rem enlisted in the US Navy and served as Machinist Mate on the Battleship Iowa. The Iowa was awarded three battle stars and transported President Roosevelt to the Tehran Conference during the two years that Rem served aboard.
After the war, Rem married Dolly, the love of his life, and moved to Wilmington, DE. He worked for duPont at the Chambers Works as a lab technician where he was known for his practical jokes and sense of humor. Following his retirement , he drove a bus for Salesianum School and Sanford Day Camp. Rem was very active in St. Hedwig Parish and also volunteered countless hours at Our Lady of Grace Home in Ogletown, DE.
Rem was a loving father, rearing two sons with Dolly, and later loving and babysitting his grandchildren and his niece Erin. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Gladys (Dolly) Gentkowski Szaroleta, sons David and his wife Colleen, Kenneth and his wife Marjorie, grandchildren, Jennifer Romano (John), Steven Szaroleta (Trish) and Mark Szaroleta (Emily)!, and great grandchildren Anthony, Madison, Ava and Kinley.
The family would like to thank the staff at Ware Presbyterian Village in Oxford, PA who so lovingly cared for Rem during the past 4 1/2 years. They were truly his second family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Hedwig Church, Linden and So. Harrison Streets, Wilmington, DE, on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 10:30 am. Friends may call at the John F. Yasik Funeral Home, 607 So. Harrison Street, on Wednesday evening from 6-8:00 pm. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery.
The family recommends donations be made in Rem's name to either Ware Presbyterian Village or Salesianum School.
