Walter S. Mateja

1918 - 2013

Walter passed peacefully at the Veterans Home in Milford, Delaware on Wednesday August 7^th, 2013 after a long illness. He was born in Chester, PA and lived most of his adult life in Wilmington, DE.

Walter was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a founding member of Paul J. Reichle VFW Post in Chester, PA and a member of VFW Post 3257 in Wilmington, DE. For most of his career he worked as a shipyard worker furthering his love of boats and retired in 1980 from Avi-Sun in New Castle, DE.

He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Irene (Krzyzanowski) Mateja of Wilmington and by his parents Anthony and Agnes (Gorak) Matyja and his sister Alfreda (Matyja) Iacono of Chester, PA.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his son, Walter A. Mateja, Sr. and his wife Carol A. Mateja; seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and one great-great grand daughter; his sister, Julia (Matyja) Shaw of Chester, PA; his brother-in-law, Edmund Krzyzanowski and his wife Sophie and his faithful dog “Cricket”.

Visitation will be held at St. Hedwig Catholic Church, Linden and S. Harrison Sts. from 9:30 to 10:20 am on Tuesday August 13^th, 2013 followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am. Entombment will be at Cathedral Cemetery in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Mausoleum section located in the main chapel.
